Peter Johnson, 1925-2013

Peter Johnson, founder of Skegness Springs Ltd, has died at the age of 88 following a brief battle with cancer.

Peter was born in London on 21 January 1925 and moved to Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, in the early 1930s.

He attended Lancing College in West Sussex during the war before joining the RAF in July 1943, serving in Montrose and Donibristle prior to a planned deployment in the Far East – plans that were cancelled when the war ended.

Having been trained in engineering during his time in the RAF, Peter joined the family spring-making firm Pocklington & Johnson, saying recently that he, “had always assumed a moral progression into the firm”. In 1954 he joined his father, Luther Josiah Johnson, as a company director.

Following the chance sighting of a property advert in the window of a Boston estate agents’, a viewing of industrial premises on Church Lane, Skegness, was arranged and Skegness Springs Ltd opened in May 1974.

Since then, Peter and his sons David and Ian have taken the firm from strength to strength, including a move in 1996 to Hassall Road, Skegness, that more than doubled the available work area. Peter continued to work at the firm well into his 80s – in recent years, researching and writing the history of the company that was published in 2010.

Peter enjoyed travelling and visited countries as far afield as Nepal and Canada; regular summer and winter holidays were taken with family and friends walking, skiing and cycling in Switzerland. He was an active Rotarian for nearly 50 years, involved with dozens of community projects and fundraising initiatives.

Peter died peacefully in his sleep early on Wednesday morning (6 February) at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston, with his daughter Heather and grand-daughter Philippa by his bedside. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Jill, their three children, nine grand-children and two great-grand-children.

A memorial service will take place at 11:30am, Wednesday 20 February, at St Mary’s Church, Winthorpe.
